Our Network

Green Cross Organisations are established in over 31 countries

Interested in establishing a Green Cross International (GCI) affiliate in your country?

If you would like to establish a Green Cross National Organisation (GCNO) in your country please adhere to the following procedure:

1. Read the GCI Memorandum with the essential conditions to be met in order to apply for the status of a GCNO Preparatory Committee.

2. Only if you meet all these conditions, please download, complete and send the Questionnaire to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for due consideration, with mention in the subject line “Application for GCNO status”.

3. Once you receive positive feedback to your Questionnaire, you will be required to prepare an Action Plan including a detailed description of the projects you would like to implement, your budget and financial sources (donors), and information on potential board and staff members (please provide full CVs as separate documents). Furthermore you will have to plan a trip to GCI HQ in Geneva in order to meet GCI management and present your Action Plan. Please note that no financial support should be provided by GCI regarding your travel expenses.

4. If your Action Plan is approved by GCI Management, an Interim Agreement of Recognition will be signed between GCI and your entity thereby giving your entity the status of PrepCom (Preparatory Committee) for a one year probationary period during which you will have to start your activities and implementation of projects. At at the end of the probationary period, a fully detailed report is to be provided, after which GCI Management will either grant your entity full National Organisation status, extend your status of PrepCom for another year or decide to discontinue the relationship with your organisation should the results be unsatisfactory.

Argentina

Background Information
Green Cross Argentina was created on March 15th, 1997. Mikhail Gorbachev ’s inspiring ideals and the strong desire to share in his battle for a peaceful and sustainable world were determining factors in starting our chapter.

GC Argentina promotes activities around the Earth Charter such as roundtables, papers, public hearings, approaching congressmen and governmental authorities to create the need to approve the Earth Charter principles as state policy.

National programs
Projects were held in collaboration with the Fondo Nacional para Ciencia y Técnica (FONCyt), or the National Fund for Science and Technology.

1. Pilcomayo River Programme in Northern Argentina
An environmental impact assessment was carried out following the construction of mine industries in neighboring Bolivia, focusing on the impact of hard metal pollution on indigenous tribes in Northern Argentina region.

2. Emergency response and river clean-up programme in Buenos Aires
The aim of the programme is to reduce the impact of potential flood disasters in southern Buenos Aires. The main activity is to improve the prevention and alarm system to decrease the risk and impact of catastrophes. GC Argentina is a key player within the Riachuelo River Commission and helps devise strategies for more efficient river pollution control and effective emergency responses in the event of floods.

3. Pirquitas Project
This project proposes the design of an environmental model of watershed, which contemplates all the structural and non-structural requirements according to the thematic areas, in an attempt to protect and preserve natural resources (specifically water). Furthermore, further study of the Las Pirquitas dam as proposed to develop more efficient future strategies.

4. Development of environmental policy for the City of Buenos Aires and training of environmental policy leaders
Green Cross Argentina has established strong ties with the City of Buenos Aires and Ministry of the
Environment. GC Argentina and the City of Buenos Aires have agreed to develop a comprehensive plan on urban solid waste management in order to find sustainable strategies relating to land fills, treatment plants and conversion plants procedures. In addition, GC Argentina has a key role in the election of Chief of Government of the City to ensure that sound environmental policies will be implemented. Projects are underway to discuss, assess and agree on proposals for environmental programs for the city with the active participation of GC Argentina.

5. Yungas Project
An assessment was carried out to investigate the environmental impacts of intensive agriculture practices extending into the Yunga jungle (northwest Argentina) during the past 30 years. New forms of sustainable farming methods were introduced based on the impact assessment.

6. Environmental education programmes for disabled children
The objective of this project is to contribute to the integral formation of disabled children through participating in activities on an ecological farm (organic food processing, basic agriculture, etc.). The activities help children think of environmental issues independently and gain a first hand experience of protecting the environment in which they live in.

7. Forest fire risk reduction in the City of San Carlos de Bariloche
As a result of the increase in forest fires and the implications of a growing town center, the project aims to contribute to the training of local settlers to respond and manager forest fires more efficiently in the summer seasons.

8. Huemul Island Project
A fundraising project to support sustainable tourism in Nahuel Huapi National Park in Southwest Argentina. Throughout the 1950s, the island which constitutes today’s national park harbored the first nuclear fusion activities in Argentina. Today, the remains of the laboratories and nuclear facilities are displayed as a modern environmental science museum and complemented by nature tours in the surrounding area. The funds collected will help build an environmentally friendly boat to transport visitors to the island.

International programs
Conflict resolution of Paper Mills Implantation Project

GC Argentina has conducted an environmental impact assessment to investigate the impact of the Paper Mills Implantation Project, specifically the possibility of trans-boundary air and water pollution across national borders and the consequences on the local Argentinean population in the city of Gualeguaychu. The objective of the project is to establish a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution between the various stakeholders affected by the paper mills.

Neuquen Province Development Programme

A project to promote sustainable development practices throughout the Neuquen Province. The main outcome of the project is to convert industries in the province toward more sustainable sylviculture and tourism industry practices as well as to promote the use of renewable energies (hydroelectric and wind) and sustainable development of ore mines.

Earth Charter activities in Buenos Aires

Based on the principles of the Earth Charter, GC Argentina actively participated in environmental education programmes across Buenos Aires with 28 local environmental organisations and 32 schools. The coalition of organisations proposed new ways of protecting the environment for communities and gave presentations to schoolchildren across the city. A similar project is the Earth Charter Youth Contest in which proposals for environmental initiatives are created by youth and the activities are supported by GC Argentina throughout South America.

Floods Mission in Corrientes Province

Last may (1998), a mission between GCA, GCUK, GCI and White Helmets (from Argentina), carried out in Corrientes Province (Northeast of Argentina) for the Government of Corrientes. The objective of the study was to provide an initial evaluation of the impacts of the recent floods in this Province and propose practical measures to be taken during the initial period, when the people return to their homes.

Australia

Background Information

At the Brisbane Earth Dialogues Forum in July 2006, President Gorbachev and Alexander Likhotal (President and CEO of Green Cross International) signed an agreement with Queensland Premier Peter Beattie and Lord Mayor Campbell Newman to establish a Secretariat for Green Cross International in Brisbane.

Green Cross Australia was launched on 14 June 2007 in Brisbane to foster a global values shift and through practical projects in Australia and its region by promoting a peaceful, just and sustainable future. We believe that responding to global problems requires a balanced and holistic approach with co-operation across governments, industries and communities to ensure the equitable distribution of resources. We are committed to the global program initiatives of Green Cross International through our project focus areas:

• Environmental restoration
• Environmental peace building
• Avenues for action

National programs
Earth Charter Children's Poster Competition

The aim of this competition is to not only raise awareness of the Earth Charter as an educational tool but also to acknowledge the achievements of Queensland schools as they work towards creating a more peaceful, just and sustainable future.

The 16 winning entries will be published as part of the new Queensland version of the Earth Charter Children's poster.

International programs
2008 Climate Refugee Consensus Conference

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sea levels are rising faster than predicted with potentially disastrous humanitarian consequences. The IPCC has warned that “By the middle of the century, more than 200 million people could have been forced from their native lands by rising sea levels, floods and droughts, with many more facing early deaths from malnutrition and heat stress.”

Most of the dislocation is predicted to occur in the Asia-Pacific Region. Green Cross’ 2008 Climate Refugee Consensus Conference will prepare Australia for the dislocation of people resulting from sea level and temperature rise in the region.

Belarus

Background Information
GCB started in 1989 as the public group ‘Doctors For Children’ which became ‘Green Cross Belarus’ in 1999. GC Belarus employs professionals on a voluntary basis from a range of different sectors such as scientists, medical practitioners, engineers, teachers, artists, writers and educators.

GC Belarus was founded primarily as a response to the Chernobyl catastrophe that contaminated 25% of Belarus and about two million Belarusians were affected by the catastrophe.

The main objectives of GC Belarus through numerous programs and initiatives include:

• To promote an ecological perspective in all spheres of human activity for the sake of preserving life on the planet and sustainable development in the economy.
• To advance co-operation between governmental institutions, civil society, scientists and youth through various joint initiatives to solve ecological, scientific, educational, cultural, and health-related problems.
• To promote environmental education and awareness amongst children and adults and to develop future innovative initiatives in all spheres of human activity.
• To assist the general public by providing expertise in disaster recovery in ecological disaster zones.
• To develop international co-operation in the fields of ecology, science, education and health care and to educate future generations in order to mitigate the impact of local or global environmental crises.

International programs
GC Belarus’ programmes are implemented within two priority areas: Social and Medical Rehabilitation and Environmental Education.

Since 1989, GC Belarus’ social and medical care programmes have reached more than 35,000 people in areas throughout Belarus, Russia and Ukraine that were contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster.

Therapy camps
The Green Cross therapy camps operate across the region affected by the Chernobyl disaster and chemical weapon stockpile areas. The aim of the programme is to support, counsel and provide medical care to children born in the Chernobyl region since 1986. The majority of children in this region have chronic problems with their respiratory, digestive and endocrine systems. Thus, camp is an opportunity for them to receive treatment, rest and a positive atmosphere for personal development and recreational activities.

Mother and Child Project
The Mother and Child Project was initiated to support mothers and children to cope with the effect of radioactive contamination by providing focused medical care as well as educating households on preventive measures to reduce exposure to radioactivity. Over a period of 21 days

Individual Health Related Programmes
Medical experts have developed an efficient monitoring and evaluation database on 52,000 inhabitants in the ecological disasters zones and have continued the medical analysis of these results in order to propose successful health care systems and preventive strategies.

GC Belarus has also implemented 24 rehabilitation camps for 6,203 children in the Chernobyl region and the various chemical weapon stockpiles regions throughout Belarus, Russia and Ukraine. To date, more than 1,264 mothers and 1,428 pre-school children have received health care and training on radiological safety, food cleaning and preventive measures. A comprehensive family based health care program has been put into place in several communities.

As part of the Social and Medical Care Programe, GC Belarus has organised 72 national and international seminars and therapy camps for children, students and teachers from seven countries; national festivals and contests in which 33,000 children and 9,000 teachers from eight countries participated in.

In 2005, GCB was awarded the National Ecological Award, the ‘Eco-World 2005,’ having been nominated in the ‘Ecology and Health’ section by the Russian Duma and the Russian Academy of Sciences.

International Drawing Contest Results in Belarus 'In My HomeLand'

The International Drawing Contest coordinated by GC Belarus has been a huge success. The competition attracted 7579 drawings from 11 countries: a total of 4 more countries and 1000 more participants than previous years - all without advertising. The jury comprised art teachers from 4 countries, who were selected due to their having taught the previous years' winners; putting them on the jury was a way of recognizing their teaching skills. 105 drawings were graded 1 to 3, and given diplomas accordingly; 521 drawings were awarded as 'Member of the International Art Exhibition;' 860 as 'Participants of the International Contest;' and the remaining children received 'Thank-you letters. The Palace of the Republic, in Minsk, will display the winning drawings from 6th April, and due to the massive number of participants, there will also be an online 'gallery'.
