Environmental Education

In this international project, Ms. Danuse Kvasnickova is deeply involved. Besides her work for GCI in this area, she is leading person for projects concerning environmental education not only within GC activities, but also in other organizations, schools and university.

School Contest.

The final ceremony for the international winner in our country, so much expected by the winners, was finally held on 17 Jan 1999 in Jirice. In connection with the prize for the third place in the youngest category, a project for revitalization of a pond has been carried out. The realization of these works were completed in this 1999. This, in fact a new pond was named Zelen kr’), which means The Pond of Green Cross.

The second round of the school contest was successfully prepared and completed in the last year. A brochure about alternative energy issues was sent to nearly all Czech schools. As Green Cross Czech Republic did not get support from the ministry of Environment nor any other ministry the contest had been carried out in close co-operation with the Club of Ecology that got subsidy from the Ministry of Environment and another ecological organization called "Dandelion".

In May 1999 a press conference was held together with the exhibition of the school paintings.

The evaluation of the national round was held in the building of the ministry of environment by the presence of the minister on 9 June. The winners were awarded by glass cups sponsored by Glassworks Jihlava ..

Soon after this contest was completed, the works for the new round of the school contest commenced. Since GCCR did not get any subsidy from the ministry of environment we rely again on the co-operation with the Club of Ecological Education and other ecological organizations.

In connection with the contest we organize exhibitions of the drawings and information on the Youth contest in order to give in awareness of public the knowledge of the necessity to lead the citizens to behave thoughtfully of the environment from the childhood.

Ecological education

Two projects concerning the environmental education exist. First one is concerned the ecological education of public by the mass media. and the second concerns the school environmental education. The first one is the following project:

Ecological education of public

Aim of the project:
The aim of this project is to get into awareness of people's the manners of behaviour which would be in compliance the sustainable development The environment is endangered not only by pollutants but also by inconsiderable human interference with landscapes or nature. That is why people should be taught about the relationship among the components of the environment and their mutual influence. The principles of ecological behaviour and basic knowledge of the components of environment should be installed mostly in children's and adolescent's awareness since they will carry the responsibility for the environment and future development.

The project intended for mass media is standing by due to lack of financial means for final realization.

TRINS

Transport Information Accident Response System

This project is a logical continuation of the former GCI project PEER. Within this project, enterprises of chemical industry that fulfil strict conditions of ecological measure including ecological education and training of employees are awarded by a Logo of

Responsible Care

Enterprises having interest in reaching this logo have to submit a questionnaire with many questions concerning the manipulation with waste, education of employees, security of work etc. Answers are evaluated by points in accordance with precisely defined scale. For reaching the Logo, the predefined amount of points must be achieved depending on the size of the enterprise. An inspection team of the Association of Chemical Industry checks randomly the situation. The Logo must be renewed every two years. In the Czech Republic about 55 % of enterprises have applied for this logo including all of the biggest enterprises. Czech GC participates in the evaluation board.

Sorting of Wastes and Wild Waste Deposits Liquidation

In recent years the local authorities cancelled many of small waste deposits due to the lack of money which resulted in many "Wild Waste Deposits". Therefore we started an initiative which should help to liquidate these Wild Waste Deposits. These deposits are spread all over the country. The first phase is in co-operation with the local authorities to prepare places for wastes. Next phase is to organize an informative campaign and to convince the citizens that, for a small fee, they can lay off some unusable pieces of furniture (old ovens, TV sets etc.). The next stage is to persuade the local enterprises of the necessity to help by their technical means to remove these wild waste deposits and to move them to the real deposit places. Another problem is with the home wastes. They should be sorted before their liquidation. Also, a campaign for the public should be held. For this reason, a screenplay has been prepared with the local authorities and the agency Golem. This campaign will take place on TV in short shots. We believe that this activity will help the present situation.

In recent days the board of GC Czech Republic was rebuilt. Two new members will participate in our activities. One of them is Mrs. Eva Skalova and the second is the former deputy director of the Czech Hydrometeorological service, an expert in hydrology and water management Mr. Joseph Hladny, member of the Czech UNESCO committee who can participate in international GCI water projects.
